Have you had unprotected sex? Did the condom break? Or do you think your usual method of contraception didn’t work properly?
Well…first of all…DON’T PANIC!
If it has just happened you need to act quickly so read our ‘In an emergency’ page which will advise what you need to do next.
Otherwise a pregnancy test can be taken as soon as you realise you are late for a period. If your periods are very irregular, a test can be done 3 weeks after the date that you had unprotected sex.
The earlier you find out that you’re pregnant, the more options you have.
Missing a period is the usually a sign of pregnancy.
Other things to look out for include:
 |
Feeling sick, nauseous or vomiting |
 |
Feeling tired or moody (more than usual!) |
 |
Needing to pee more often than normal |
 |
Sore or tender breasts |
You can have a pregnancy test for free at any FRESH clinic and the doctor or nurse will also be able to talk to you about your choices if it turns out that you are pregnant. We won’t tell anybody that you’ve had a test and the results will be kept confidential.
You can also buy a pregnancy test from any chemist or supermarket should you want to but they cost around £10 and don’t come with the expert advice a medical professional can give you.
If the test is positive, it’s really important that you act quickly so you can find out your options and decide what’s best for you. Talking to family and friends can really help but it’s very important to also see a medical professional – for example a Contraception and Sexual Health nurse or your GP or Practice Nurse. You can also look at our page on your options including abortion for more information.
If the test is negative, it’s also a good idea to visit FRESH or any other Contraceptive service to make sure you are using the method of contraception that suits you best. |
